Updated: Feb 15

The Mijas Masters Triples event kindly sponsored by Ibex Insurance had 23 entries and the Semi Finals and Final matches played on Saturday 15th February were played at a very high standard with both semis going to the final end. Unfortunately Terry Higgins of Lauro was unable to play due to illness and was replaced by Jeff Turner.

Eoghain/Juan/Chris N (Mijas) had the best of the early exchanges taking a 6-1 lead into the 7th end, before Kevin, Paul and Jeff (Lauro) won three ends in a row to square the tie. The ends were shared through until the 14th end with only singles and double for Mijas to leave the game tied again at 9-9 after the 14th end. The Mijas team then picked up a 4 and a 2 which in the end proved decisive when the Lauro trio only managed to pick up a 2 in the 17th end meaning they needed a 4 in the final end to force the extra end. The Mijas team were able to build a strong position from the first bowl and consolidated their position covering all the options and avoided having to play their last bowl.

The other all Saydo Semi final seen excellent bowling from Simon, Clive and Nigel but they were matched by Bill, Margaret and Terry. The game was 6-6 going into the 9th end and despite picking up a single in the 10th end it was Nigel's team that stretched out in front and had a 16-7 lead by the 13th end. A 4 in the 14th end for Terrys team started a 4 end scoring streak and the game was all square at 16-16 by the 16th end and another singe in end 17 took them into the lead. Nigel, Simon and Clive decided not to play their last bowl and took the chance on a close measure to win the game 18-17.

The Final was played at the same high standard, but Mijas trio of Eoghain, Christine and Juan were able to come back from 5 down after the first 2 ends and were all square at 7-7 by the 6th end. The Saydo team were only able to win 3 more ends and the counts were restricted to a single and a couple of doubles while their opposition picked 6 multiples and ended the game in the 17th end winning 23-12.

Congratulations to all of the competitors and especially those that reached the final day. Thanks to all the spectators who came to support the players, Sheila for covering the bar and catering and the Umpires and club members who supported behind the bar.

The Prizes and the trophy was presented by Sandy Guthrie on behalf of Ibex.
